And before you panic, it’s not because you’re in charge of teaching them all of the facts and phonics you can think of — it’s because the real skills they need to confidently navigate their transition to kindergarten are the ones they develop through everyday life with you.
You are your child’s first and most important teacher.
After spending years as an elementary school social worker, I thought I knew everything about what it takes to raise a kid —
And then, of course, I actually became a parent (and was immediately humbled).
Overnight, it seemed like my husband and I had to become experts in everything: lactation, tummy time, preventing food allergies, wake windows — even playing with our baby felt complicated, because we didn’t know if we were doing it “right.”
So, I set out to fill the resource gap and give parents a better way to prepare their kids for kindergarten — rooted in early childhood development research and created specifically for busy family schedules.
Even though I’d seen firsthand that the “book learning” can happen at school (and the emotional learning is what lays the foundation for success), I felt like I had to constantly drill my daughter with phonics and math, because the only school readiness resources I could find were academic.
Like many parents, I had some learning and unlearning to do when I had children of my own. I knew I didn't want to approach parenthood from the same perspectives I was raised with, but I literally didn’t know any other way. My hope is that every Bright Starts Co. resource helps you feel like a calmer, more confident parent — even if you weren’t raised with a lot of emotional tools yourself — so you can show up for your kids the way you wish someone had shown up for you.
A simple set of resources that make all the morning things (like the getting-dressed battles and the “I don’t WANT to go!” meltdowns) easier and more predictable.
A self-paced kindergarten preparedness course that helps you teach your child real-world skills for kindergarten success — no flashcards or worksheets required.
Nobody gets it right the first time, every time. The more chances your child has to practice skills in a safe and low-stakes environment, the more naturally they show up when it counts — which is why we never expect perfection and focus on consistency instead.
The kids who succeed in school are the ones who can transition from one activity to another without meltdowns, who can ask for help when they need it, and who feel comfortable at school — all skills we focus on building together through Bright Starts Co. resources.
Discipline isn’t a teaching strategy — it just addresses a single behavior in a single moment. Everything here is created to help kids actually learn from their experiences, so the skills stick.
Every family deserves a clear, confident path forward — free from conflicting advice and overwhelming expectations.
A strong parent-child relationship makes every life skill easier to build, and every hard moment easier to navigate.
Real confidence isn't innate — it’s created, through the everyday moments that teach kids who they are and what they're capable of.
